Chapter 15A

A large campfire crackled and popped with the dry foliage fuelling its flames. Many of the children had fallen asleep under the canopy branches of the forest they were resting in. The chamber, the gateway to Springfield, was not far away, a matter of metres in reality, but when closed, it was completely invisible. Greg and James were wide awake, both excited by what was going on. Greg sat beside Rose, and James beside Anna. Jessica had allowed Jack to fall asleep naturally and he rested his head against her thigh and the small fallen tree trunk she was sitting on upon. Sally sat beside Wolf. Their children were all sleeping.

“We can't just wait here for something to happen,” Mark began as his thoughts ran away from him, “we're stuck between a rock and a hard place.”

“I can't believe everything that happened. What were those things? Where did they come from?” Charlie asked.

“I don't know. What we do know, though, is that it hasn't gone unnoticed. At least the military is doing something about it,” Wolf replied.

“I was so glad to see the Colonel,” Anna said softly, “I thought he was dead for sure.”

“But he wasn't,” Wolf replied, smiling, “and he saved us.”

“For what, though?” Mark asked. “Look at us; we're sat in a forest on Earth with no way to contact personnel on either planet. It's a good job we're in summer here or we'd be freezing to death right about now.”

“Mark, we're alive, the children are alive, and that's the most important thing. We'll find a way to contact officials on this planet some time,” Wolf replied, keeping his voice low so as not to disturb the sleeping children. He was relieved merely to have survived and he was certain that the beasts he had seen on Springfield did not have the intelligence to get through the chamber. If he were surprised that Tom appeared to have done nothing to help, he made no mention of it.

“I have my doubts,” Mark replied. “I couldn't reach anywhere I needed to when I left here, and with insufficient money I had no chance to get close to contacting the military.” On Springfield, money had fallen out of use and people had reverted to barter. He had forgotten what Earth was like. “If we contact the emergency services, we'll be scrutinised for sure, especially if we say we came here through a secret gateway. Face it, we're stuck.” He had failed totally in his mission to find assistance and was feeling very disappointed with life in general.

Wolf sighed. “You and I can go back through the chamber tomorrow. We can check with the two sentries to find out what's happening. They're in contact with Daniel and the colonel, and we can get an update.” He then noticed Sally smiling. She noticed him looking.

“Baby's moving,” she said quietly. Anna joined the conversation.

“Mine too.” She was very pleased about the baby, not nearly so pleased about Daniel. In fact, she was beginning to wonder if she really needed him anymore.
